IPL4 : Consolidation

IPL(Indian Premier League) T20 has provided a platform for India to look at cricket in a new light. It is a platform where new talent is being discovered, not just batsmen and bowlers but also people who can captain well. A captain or a skipper has a position in cricket, and especially in T20 cricket, where he can make decisions which may ultimately lead a team to victory or failure.
A senior player who is brilliant in batting /bowling/wicket keeping and fielding is generally picked up as a captain. However, besides having a thorough knowledge of his sport and being in good form himself it is imperative that the captain has the ability to take decisions in favor of his team, take responsibility for taking his team towards victory and keep motivational levels of the team high. And in cases where these qualities are not inherent, the captain should ask for classroom training to understand how to develop of skills related to motivation and influencing team members.

We have recently witnessed Virender Sehwag understand this where in the match against KTK on 30Apr,2011 he took the reins of the game in his own hands.
Special mention to be made of Yuvraj Singh who after a couple of initial victories has not been able to consolidate his team which is very good on paper but has been performing that well on field. Earlier it seemed the problem could be fixed with changes in batting order, which did help to an extent but was not enough to take PWI to victory. To win is required a do or die spirit from a motivated team and a lot of thinking by the captain. Am sure watching matches where MS Dhoni has managed to turn things around in favor of his team will help any struggling captain. 2 recent matches worth mention are the World cup final held on 2 Apr, 2011 and the IPL4 match with Deccan chargers in Chennai on 1 May,2011.

And the Golden Rule for a captain is to take responsibility for defeat and not single out team members. Cricket is a team work wherein a captain has special powers. It is upto him on how best he utilizes the power to turn a game around. Am sure Shane Warne will vouch for this.

The captains who gel well with the team and have experience and thinking to match have raised the bar in IPL. They have been able to consolidate theit teams and are moving up the rank charts.

Update on 3May2011: And Dada is Back in IPL: The answer to the concerns raised in my previous post regarding captaincy and leadership skills in Pune Warriors India is here. Sourav Ganguly has joined PWI team, and as we know he is immensely talented and experienced in leading a team. However, what remains to be seen is that in his position which is next to the captain Yuvraj Singh, will he be able to influence the captain and motivate the team enough to make the team win rest of the matches, and will Dada be able to play like a true warrior with his bat in order to prove his point?
